Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
