In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
