Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
